October half term in Brighton is a good bet for families. The crowds are thinner than summer and there is plenty to do whatever the weather. The sea will be cold and the forecast will be unreliable, so plan for both, and choose where you stay with children in mind.
This guide covers the dates, what to do on dry and wet days, which part of the city suits which family, and what to check before you book a short stay.
The dates
- 26 OctHalf term starts (Monday)
- 30 OctHalf term ends (Friday)
- 18 DecAutumn term ends
Those are the Brighton & Hove City Council dates for community schools in 2026. Academies, free schools and independent schools can set their own, and visitors’ home areas will differ. Check your own school’s calendar before you book.
Free and outdoor
You don’t need to spend much to fill a day. These are free to enter.
- The beach. Pebbles rather than sand, so it is better for skimming stones and building piles than for digging. The water is cold outside high summer.
- Preston Park. The biggest park in the city, with a playground and plenty of open grass.
- The Level. A family park with a playground, skatepark and basketball courts, a short walk from the station.
- The seafront path. It is flat, which suits scooters and small bikes, and runs from Hove Lagoon to the Marina. Bike hire costs extra.
- The South Downs. Kite flying and big views at Devil’s Dyke and Ditchling Beacon, about 20 minutes from the centre.
When it rains
Brighton has more indoor options than most seaside towns. Details below come from a local family guide published by Brighton Insider in 2026. Check opening times and booking rules before you go, because autumn hours can change.
| Option | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Sea Life Brighton | Timed entry, booked online. Allow one to two hours. Go early, before it fills after 11am. |
| Brighton Museum & Art Gallery | Family exhibitions on the ground floor. Allow 60 to 90 minutes. |
| Royal Pavilion | An unusual building that most children enjoy. Go before museum fatigue sets in. |
| Ten-pin bowling and mini golf | Based at the Marina. Lighter balls and bumper rails for younger children. |
| Soft play | Several venues for under-8s. Book ahead, as popular ones fill up. |
The point: pick one booked activity for the wet day and one free outdoor plan for the dry one. Swap them when the forecast changes. Don’t pre-pay for every day.
Easy day trips
If you are staying for the full week, a change of scene helps. Lewes is about 15 minutes by train and has a castle and cobbled streets. Worthing is about 20 minutes west and has a quieter seafront. Check train times and any planned engineering works on the day.
Which part of the city suits a family
| If you want | Look at |
|---|---|
| Flat walks, a quieter seafront, space for scooters | Hove |
| The Marina, watersports and the outdoor pool | Kemptown and the Marina side |
| Station access, the Level and the main attractions on foot | Central Brighton and Seven Dials |
Each area has trade-offs on noise, hills and parking. Our guide to the Brighton and Hove neighbourhoods covers them area by area.
What to check before booking a family stay
“Sleeps five” tells you very little. Ask these questions first.
- How are the beds arranged? Ask for the actual layout, including whether the sofa bed is a proper bed.
- What baby equipment is there? Cots, high chairs and stair gates are not standard. Ask what is provided, and don’t assume.
- What does the kitchen have? A full oven, enough plates and a dishwasher make family meals easier than takeaways every night.
- Is there a washing machine and somewhere to dry clothes? Wet coats and muddy trousers are normal in October.
- How many stairs are there? Check lifts and ground-floor options if you have a buggy.
- What are the parking arrangements? Ask about permits and the nearest space.
Book early. Half term nights go first, and many places apply a minimum stay. Have your dates fixed and ask for the full price, including cleaning fees and any deposit, before you commit.
A few practical tips
- Eat early or late. Restaurants tend to fill around 12:30 to 1:30pm and 6 to 7pm.
- Pack for four seasons. Waterproofs, spare socks and a change of clothes for the youngest.
- Leave the car if you can. The attractions are close together and the seafront is easy to walk.
